Claude Taylor Store
During the 1950s and 1960s, this store
building was known as the Claude Taylor Store. It was located at the
intersection of Highway 22 and 424 in Clarksburg. At the time this
photograph was taken, Jessie Pendergrass ran the store on the north side
of Highway 424 which is shown. Much news, gossip, and advice were
exchanged on the porch benches. Mr. Claude sold groceries and Gulf
brand gasoline.
Druggist Cyrus Daniel Carlton, who was married to
Mollie Pond Clark, the granddaughter of Lewis K. Clark, "The Founder" of
Clarksburg, ran a drugstore in this building during the early 1900s.
The store was torn down in the 1970s to make room for a parking lot. Today
the location of the store is in the parking lot of the Clarksburg Super
Market.
At the time the drug store was in business, Dr. McGill's
Clinic was located behind the building.
