Janice Raye Rainey
25 November 1941 - 7 March 1960
Janice Raye Rainey was born 25 November 1941. Her parents
were the late Rupert Warren Rainey
and Mary Jo McDaniel. Janice would grow to womanhood in Yuma, Tennessee,
along with
her sister Joy Evelyn. Janice spent her young years doing what all young
folks did around
the Yuma Community. She had an outgoing personality and had many friends,
both male
and female. She entered Clarksburg High School during Summer School
1955 and graduated
May 1959. During her time attending Clarksburg High School,
Janice developed a reputation as a very exceptional women's basketball forward.
In those days,
women's basketball was played half court of three players. There were
three forwards
on one end and three guards on the other end. In fall 1959, Janice entered
college
at the University of Tennessee - Martin Branch (UTMB). During her freshman
year at UTMB, she was named the most valuable player, and tapped for
a trophy in campus basketball games at the university. She had also
been
qualified as a Junior Red Cross life guard. Tragically, she was returning
from Yuma to UTMB
on Saturday morning, along with a friend, on 20 February 1960 to attend
classes. She was making a turn off Highway 79 in McKenzie and was rammed
by anther driver/car. Janice received serious internal injuries and was
admitted
into a Memphis area hospital. Janice died from her injuries on 7 March
1960. Her
remains were buried in the Jones Cemetery located near
Parkers Crossroads, Tennessee.
