Dr. Homer McGill and Donie were active in the community. Dr. McGill wanted to get a high school in Clarksburg. Donie told Thomas Wilson it was not good to bring up children in a town where there was no church. This suggestion received a responsive hearing from Christians who had been meeting with Church of Christ members in the rural communities and a small group began meeting in the old school house in Clarksburg. In 1916 when the new brick high school was built the church bought the old school house and Dr. McGill was appointed one of its trustees. Obituary: Dies at Clarksburg: Last rites for Dr. H.D. McGill, 84, one of the state's most widely known physicians, were conducted at the Clarksburg Church of Christ Sunday afternoon with Bro. W.L. Denton of Holladay officiating. Dr. McGill died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R.B. Wilson, at Clarksburg, Thursday night following a three week's illness. He was one of the state's oldest practicing physicians in line of service having practiced medicine for sixty-three years. He began practice at the age of 21 years. The son of the late Sarah Meals and E.T. McGill, Dr. McGill was born in Henderson County on July 3, 1857. His early education was received at Huntingdon schools and he was graduated from the old Nashville School of Medicine, now the University of Tennessee. He opened practice at McLemoresville but soon moved to Clarksburg, where he was practicing at the time of his death. He received graduate work in homeopathics at the St. Louis University. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. J.D. Tilson, Sr., of Lexington; Mrs. R.B. Wilson, Clarksburg; Mrs. Joe Netherland, Murfreesboro, and Mrs. J.W. Dunn of Tupelo, Mississippi; one sister, Miss Mary McGill of Clarksburg; and a brother, A.S. McGill, Camden. Burial was in the Blair Cemetery at Clarksburg. H. D. McGill, M.D., was born in Henderson County, Tenn., in 1858 and is one of a family of eight children born to E. T. and Sarah (Meals) McGill. The father was born in Giles County, October, 1825 and was of Scotch-Irish extraction. He was reared on a farm by a Mr. William Legg, of Alabama, and had no advantages for an education. In 1849 he was married and December of the same year removed to Henderson County. He was engaged in the mercantile business for many years at Metropolis, Huntingdon and other places and also dealt somewhat largely in cotton. In 1870 he went to Nashville and engaged in the cotton business there for McCray & Co. He is now acting as traveling salesman for a firm in Cincinnati, Ohio. Our subject received a good academia education and finished at Nashville. In 1875 he began the study of medicine under Dr. J. B. Stephens, of Nashville, and in 1877 entered Nashville Medical College and graduated from this institution in 1878. He soon located at McLemoresville and practiced there two years, after which he came to Clarksburg and has continued there ever since. In 1884 and 1885 he attended a course of lectures at the University of Tennessee where he graduated in 1885. Since his residence at Clarksburg he has established an extensive and lucrative practice and is fast becoming one of the most popular and successful physicians of the county. January 12, 1881, he married Gracie McDowell, daughter of Rev. J. L. and M. S. McDowell. Mrs. McGill died September 29, 1885, leaving three small children: Arthur, Maggie May and Gracie M. Mrs. McGill was a consistent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a fond parent and a true companion. Our subject is a Republican in politics and cast his first presidential vote for Gen. Garfield. Daniel B. Homer first married Gracie V. McDOWELL, daughter of J.L. McDOWELL (1818-1873) & Sophronie ? (1833-). Born on 14 May 1864. At the age of 21, Gracie V. died on 29 Sep 1885. Buried in McLemoresville Cemetery, McLemoresville, Carroll County, Tennessee. They had the following children:
In 1895 when Daniel B. Homer was 37, he second married Donie JAMISON, daughter of Robert JAMISON (1838-1900) & Mary Elizabeth JOHNSON (1848-1927). Born on 9 Oct 1867 in Clarksburg, 13th District, Carroll County, Tennessee. At the age of 73, Donie died on 14 Feb 1941. Buried in Feb 1941 in Blair Cemetery, Clarksburg, 13th District, Carroll County, Tennessee. Resided in District 13, Carroll County, Tennessee in 1930. They had the following children:
87. Doctor William Porter McGILL. Born on 23 Sep 1859 in Henderson County, Tennessee. At the age of 76, William Porter died in Camden, Benton County, Tennessee on 30 Nov 1935. Resided in Camden, Tennessee. Resided in District 10, Henderson County, Tennessee in 1860. Resided in Camden, Benton County, Tennessee in 1880. Resided in Camden, Benton County, Tennessee in 1920. Resided in District 5, Benton County, Tennessee in 1900. Occupation: Physician. Doctor Wiliam Porter McGill lived his life in Camden, Benton County, Tennessee. The subscription schools of Carroll county afforded William Porter McGill his preliminary education and subsequently he enrolled in the Edgefield high school and later in the Hughes and Mims schools. Upon the completion of his literary course he enrolled in the medical department of the University of Tennessee at Nashville, and received his M. D. degree from the Nashville Medical College in 1877. He practiced in Huntingdon one year and in 1879 came to Camden, where he has since resided. In a profession where advancement depends upon individual merit Dr. McGill achieved success from the start and today he is one of the most prominent physicians in the town, county and state. At present the Doctor is serving as county health officer. For forty-four years Dr. William Porter McGill has practiced medicine in Camden, and he is held in high confldence and esteem by his professional brethren and fellowmen. A native of Tennessee, his birth occurred in Henderson county, on the 22d of September, 1859, a son of Eli Taylor and Sarah Ann (Meals) McGill, both natives of Alabama. Eli Taylor McGill fought in the Mexican war. On 21 Oct 1881 when William Porter was 22, he married Cynthia PRESSON, daughter of James F. PRESSON (1824-1895) & Cynthia HOLLAND (1827-1912), in Benton County, Tennessee. Born on 25 Jul 1863 in Benton County, Tennessee. At the age of 75, Cynthia died on 4 Nov 1938. Resided in District 5, Benton County, Tennessee in 1900. Resided in Camden, Benton County, Tennessee in 1920. They had the following children:
88. Joseph Lewis McGILL. Born on 26 May 1865. At the age of 80, Joseph Lewis died in Stuttgart, Arkansas in 1946. Resided in District 11, Carroll County, Tennessee in 1880. Resided in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1930. Occupation: Insurance Salesman. On 27 Jun 1893 when Joseph Lewis was 28, he married Katherine UZZELLES, in Woodlawn, Mississippi County, Arkansas. Katherine died in 1906. They had the following children:
89. Alvin Stephen McGILL. Born on 10 Feb 1871 in Carroll County, Tennessee. At the age of 74, Alvin Stephen died in 1946. Resided in District 11, Carroll County, Tennessee in 1880. Resided in Camden, Benton County, Tennessee in 1920. Resided in Camden, Benton County, Tennessee in 1941. Occupation: Salesman. On 22 Dec 1901 when Alvin Stephen was 30, he married Almedia Christiana ALSUP, daughter of John Tildon ALSUP (1857-1896) & Martha Virginia CLEMENT (1857-1883), in Benton County, Tennessee. Born on 8 Mar 1878 in Big Sandy, Benton County, Tennessee. At the age of 79, Almedia Christiana died in Camden, Benton County, Tennessee on 5 Apr 1957. They had one child:
