Bonnie's Light

HHS Class of 1980 Names Star for Deceased Member

When the Huntingdon High School Class of 1980 met for their twenty year reunion Nov. 25 [2000] of last year at the National Guard Armory in Huntingdon, class members agreed they wanted to remember one of their deceased members in a special way. Bonnie Waugh Scott, daughter of Lester and Betty Waugh of Huntingdon, died of cancer on Jan. 20, 1992. She has two sons, Brett Scott, 16, and Cody Scott, 13. Elizabeth (Betty) Stokes Pulliam, a member of the class, now living in Las Vegas, was one of the committee members who arranged for the special memorial. "Several of her friends decided we wanted to remember Bonnie since she is the first and only one in our class lost to death," said Elizabeth. "She and I were real close friends. We waited on tables at Freeda's Restaurant together." During Bonnie's illness, friends including Renee Miller, Gina Rainey, Cindy McMinn, Barbara Wallace, Sherry Haywood, and Terry Dodd, would get together with Bonnie for a frequent outing they called, "Mom's Night Out." As a way of remembering Bonnie, a star in her memory that was named "Bonnie's Light", was purchased through a Star Registry. A map of which to located the star was presented to her parents. A framed certificate the parents also received explained the Registry. The star's name is permanently filed in the Star Registry vault in Switzerland and recorded in a book which will be registered n the United States copyright office. At the reunion, a table was set up that held a burning candle and Bonnie's photograph. "We wanted to feel that she was still a part of our class reunion," said Elizabeth. The Star Registry is a new means of paying honor and tribute to someone. "We just thought a star being named in Bonnie's honor has very special meaning," said Elizabeth. Bonnie's parents think so also. "It means a lot to us for Bonnie to be remembered by the class," said her parents. "It's comforting to know there is a star in the heavens name for her."
