By 1903 or earlier, Nancy Jane had lost her eyesight and was completely dependent upon her grown children for her livelihood. Story has it that Nancy Jane had picked up pieces of a broken mirror in her apron and later wiped her face with that apron, which caused her blindness. Samuel and Nancy Jane lived on a farm in Tennessee for many years before moving to Texas. They had over 600 acres outside Cleburne at one time. It is unknown as to why they sold this land. Possibly it was sold when Samuel died and she went to live with one of her children. In Oct 1873 when Nancy Jane was 17, she married Samuel Carson BARR, son of Thomas Jackson BARR (1817-1903) & Sarah Winifred SMITH (1825-1883), in Henderson County, Tennessee. Born on 17 Mar 1853 in Tennessee. At the age of 60, Samuel Carson died in Texas on 13 Oct 1913. Buried in 1913 in Greenwood Cemetery, Waco, McLennan County, Texas. Resided in Cleburne, Texas in 1903. Samuel Carson Barr, born March 17, 1853, in Henderson County, Tennessee. Died of "locked bowels" in 1903. By this time, Nancy Jane had lost her eyesight and was completely dependent upon her grown children for her livelihood. Samuel married Nancy Jane Meals in Henderson County, Tennessee. They lived on a farm for many years before moving to Texas. Before they moved to Texas, Nancy Jane's father, William H. Meals, had his plantation destroyed during the Civil War and the land was taken over by the Carpetbaggers. It is said that William packed up his family and headed to Texas in a covered wagon with his family. Nancy Jane was said to have been about six at the time, which means this was in the year 1862-1864. William Meals is found on census records in Henderson County, Tennessee in 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880. So unless he moved to Texas and then moved back to Tennessee at some point in time, the story of their moving to Texas could be remote. But, in those days, anything was possible because pioneers moved as much as the wind blew. Samuel and Nancy Jane settled in a place called Sand Flats, between Cleburne and Grandeview, Texas. There is still a store in Sand Flats and the cemetery (Sand Flats Cemetery) is across the street where a number of Meals and Barr's are buried. Nancy Jane had a brother, Fate and Louis Meals that lived in or around Cleburne as well. There was a trucking company in the area with the Meals name, so it is possible the Meals were prominent in this area, as was the Barr's. When Nancy Jane and Sam moved to Texas, Sam became a butcher. They had three children before leaving Tennessee and removing to Texas after 1870. Cause of Death: Locked Bowels. They had the following children:
39. Virginia F. MEALS. Born on 28 Jan 1859. At the age of 30, Virginia F. died in Henderson County, Tennessee on 26 Feb 1889. Buried in 1889 in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee. Alias/AKA: "Jenny". Cause of death: Murdered. Research: Miss Meals, daughter of Henderson Meals, was raped and murdered near Bargerton Wednesday, last week. Child:
40. Sarah Catherine MEALS. Born on 30 Oct 1862. At the age of 51, Sarah Catherine died in Henderson County, Tennessee on 27 Feb 1914. Buried in 1914 in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee. On 17 Nov 1878 when Sarah Catherine was 16, she married John Newton DOUGLAS, son of John Terry DOUGLAS (1825-1864) & Martha Jane MEALS (1829-1884), in Henderson County, Tennessee. Born on 5 Apr 1861 in Tennessee. At the age of 71, John Newton died in Tennessee on 7 Oct 1932. Buried in 1932 in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee. Will: KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS: That I , John N. Douglas of Bargerton, Henderson County, Tennessee, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament, making null and void all other wills by me at any time made: 1st. I direct that all my bona fide debts of every character, including funeral expenses, be paid promptly after my death by executors hereinafter named. 2nd. I give, devise and bequeath to my son, Lester Douglas all of my farming lands and improvements thereon, lying and being situated in the 1st Civil District of Henderson County, Tennessee, generally bounded and described as follows: 3rd. I give, devise and bequeath to my daughter, Dora Douglass-Coffman my homeplace at Bargerton, 1st Civil District of Henderson County, Tenn., which property is generally bounded and described as follows: Bounded on the North by Dora Coffman lands; on the South by the lands of Sam McDaniel; on the East by the lands of Willie Coffman; and on the West by the lands of Dora Coffman, containing about 1.5 acres, generally known as the W.A Bobbit property. Excluding, however, from said tract about 3/4 acre of land on which is located the storehouse and gin, and said 3/4 acre of an acre on which is located said storehouse and gin is not intended or understood to be devised to my said daughter, Dora Douglass-Coffman. 4th. I give and devise to my daughter, Claudia Douglass-Williams, $1000.00 Bank Stock owned by me in the Central State Bank, Lexington, Tenn., to be hers absolute Ely and as her separate property. 5th. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Josie Douglas $1,000.00 in cash, I already having a contract and agreement with her as to her share in my property, and this provision in my will is in accordance with said agreement that she is to have $1000.00 in cash. 6th. It is my Will that my said children divide equally and satisfactorily among themselves all the household goods, including beds, bed-clothing, furniture and heirlooms, belonging to me individually, without exposing any of said property for sale, and my Executors are directed to turn said property over to them. 7th. I will and direct that my said Executors sell the storehouse and lot on which it is situated and contents thereof, as well as the gin lot, and divide the proceeds equally among my said children, namely: Lester Douglass, Dora Douglass-Coffman, and Claudia Douglass-Williams, and they are hereby authorized and directed to make general warranty deeds conveying real estate. 8th. If there remains any other property, either personal or real estate which I may own at my death undisposed of above, it is my wish and Will that said property be converted into cash and divided equally among my said children. 9th. If any of the beneficiaries under this Will should contest said Will or any of the provisions thereof or bequests thereunder, they shall forfeit their rights to participate under said Will or otherwise in my estate. Lastly: I nominate and appoint as my Executors J.J. Lawrence and R.L. Douglass.
41. Lewis Cass MEALS. Born on 7 May 1866 in Tennessee. At the age of 91, Lewis Cass died in Bokchito, Oklahoma on 19 Nov 1957. Buried in 1957 in Bokchito Cemetery, Bokchito, Oklahoma. Resided in Cleburne, Texas. On 16 Dec 1894 when Lewis Cass was 28, he married Willie FOSHA, daughter of Marvin FOSHA & Fannie DIAL, in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas. Born on 5 Jun 1878 in Milan County, Texas. At the age of 52, Willie died in Bokito, Bryan County, Oklahoma on 30 Sep 1930. They had the following children:
42. William Lafayette MEALS. Born on 30 May 1868. At the age of 75, William Lafayette died on 21 Dec 1943. Buried in 1943 in Marystown Cemetery, Cleburn, Texas. Resided in Cleburne, Texas in 1933. Alias/AKA: "Fate". Lived in or around Cleburne, Texas. William Lafayette married Ada UNKNOWN. They had the following children:
43. John Addison MEALS. Born on 24 Jul 1870. At the age of 56, John Addison died on 19 Jun 1927. Buried in 1927 in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee. John Addison married Fannie Bell JAMES, daughter of Thomas JAMES & Mary Jane BARROW (1842-1899). Born on 1 Aug 1872 in Henderson County, Tennessee. At the age of 39, Fannie Bell died in Henderson County, Tennessee on 14 Jan 1912. Buried in 1912 in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee. They had the following children:
44. Albert Sidney Johnson MEALS. Born on 15 Jan 1872 in Tennessee. At the age of 69, Albert Sidney Johnson died in Tennessee on 28 Jan 1941. Buried in 1941 in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee. Resided in Henderson County, Tennessee in 1933. Alias/AKA: "Sid". Albert Sidney Johnson married Nancy Lillie JAMES, daughter of James L. JAMES (1841-1912) & Haraan BARROW (1842-1910). Born in 1879 in Tennessee. At the age of 75, Nancy Lillie died in Henderson County, Tennessee in 1954. Buried in 1954 in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Henderson County, Tennessee. They had the following children:
